Cybersecurity Hiring in 2023: Challenges and Demand for Skilled Professionals

by Brett Lockett

As technology continues to advance and become a larger part of our daily lives, the need for cybersecurity professionals has grown exponentially. In 2023, the demand for these experts is expected to continue its upward trajectory, with businesses and organisations in a variety of industries seeking to protect their digital assets and systems from a growing number of cyber threats. The hiring of these skilled professionals, though, does not come without any challenges.

Cybersecurity Hiring Challenges in 2023: Shortage

One of the biggest challenges facing organisations looking to hire cybersecurity professionals is the shortage of qualified candidates. The (ISC)2 2022 workforce study reveals that there is still a shortage of 3.4 million security specialists, representing a rise of 26% from the previous year. This marks a departure from the trend seen in the 2021 study, where the number of unfilled cybersecurity positions had decreased over the course of two years.

Cybersecurity Hiring Challenges in 2023: Lack of Diversity

According to the same ISC 2 2022 survey, 91% of respondents believe that there needs to be a push for a more diverse range of people in the cybersecurity field. The current survey of cybersecurity professionals showed that 78% of them were male, 64% were white, and 89% were heterosexual.

Different backgrounds bring unique perspectives and approaches, leading to increased innovation and creativity in the field. A lack of diversity can lead to blind spots in security, which can be exploited by attackers.

Cybersecurity Hiring Challenges in 2023: Skills gap

Another factor contributing to the shortage of cybersecurity professionals is the lack of education and training in the field. According to research conducted by the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) and Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), a division of TechTarget, 95% of cyber professionals believe that the skills gap has either remained unchanged or worsened over the past few years. Nearly half of these professionals (44%) believe that the situation has actually gotten worse.

Many potential candidates for cybersecurity positions are discouraged from applying due to the extensive requirements listed in job descriptions, which often call for a college degree, multiple certifications, and several years of experience in different security fields. Some individuals who could be valuable assets to organisations do not even apply, believing that the listed requirements are non-negotiable. Even those who do apply may not receive a response if they do not have a degree or the required hands-on experience.

Cybersecurity Hiring Challenges in 2023: Attrition

A recent survey conducted by Trellix revealed that a significant portion of the cybersecurity workforce is considering a career change. This highlights a significant issue with employee retention, largely attributed to persistent staffing shortages and the high-pressure nature of many cybersecurity jobs. The departure of individuals from the field exacerbates the shortages, leading to further departures and a vicious cycle.

Addressing the demand for Cybersecurity Professionals

The Information Systems Security Association International (ISSA) found that 1 in 3 professionals surveyed believe that HR departments exclude strong candidates for cybersecurity jobs due to a lack of understanding of necessary skills. 25% also reported that job postings have unrealistic demands for experience, certifications, and technical skills. 30% suggested that CISOs educate HR and recruiters on cybersecurity goals and needs, and 28% believe that job postings should be more realistic in terms of experience levels of cybersecurity professionals.

By working with a recruiter who has knowledge in hiring cybersecurity professionals, a company can increase its chances of attracting and retaining top talent, ensuring the success of its cybersecurity program.
